Haglund’s Deformity Shoe Stretch

Haglund’s deformity is a bump at the back of the heel bone that sometimes gets called a ‘pump bump’ (due to pressure on the bump from the pump type of footwear) and sometimes a bursitis develops over the bump from the rubbing from the shoe (‘retrocalcaneal bursitis’). There are a couple of different pads that can be used to help with a Haglund’s deformity. There is the adhesive felt that can be used to get pressure off the painful area or there are the silicon gel cushioning pads that help with the rubbing on the area.

Another approach to Haglund’s deformity is to use a shoe stretcher, to stretch the back of the shoe so that there is less pressure on the bony bump. The shoe stretcher is only going to work if the material that the footwear is made of can be stretched with gentle pressure (eg leather can, but many fabrics can’t).

A shoe stretcher can be used to gently stretch the shoe were the pressure is coming from the back of the shoe on the Haglund’s bump
